[9Box Music Recycling Notes] Voices of the Years: Teresa Teng and Paula Tsui Bidding Farewell to Their Old Homes

Having been in the business of recycling vinyl records for a long time, what I often collect is not just plastic discs, but snippets of forgotten family memories.

A few days ago,I received some photos on WhatsApp from Mr. Cheung. The photos showed several well-preserved vinyl records – the covers were still bright, and even the lyric booklets inside were perfectly flat. Mr. Cheung asked me,"Do you at '9Box Music' buy these old records. "

The next afternoon,I arrived at Mr. Cheung's old tenement building in Kowloon City, equipped with my appraisal tools.

Seller Profile and Reason for Selling

  • Seller: Mr. Cheung (52,secondary school teacher)
  • Reason for selling: "I'm preparing to move my mother, who is over seventy,to a new housing estate with an elevator. The old apartment was spacious, but the new one won't have room for so many belongings. These records were bought by my father for my mother when he was alive, but the record player at home broke a few years ago. Instead of letting them sit in a mini-storage unit out of sight,I'd rather give them to 'us' so that people who appreciate them can continue to listen. It's a kind of legacy,I suppose."

Unboxing Surprise: Timeless Classics in Excellent Condition

When Mr. Cheung took out these records from a dehumidifying box,my eyes lit up.

The most striking was a Teresa Teng album,"Fujian Songs Special: Anping Recollection." Many younger generations might only be familiar with Teresa Teng's Mandarin or Cantonese songs, but this Fujian song special was a significant work at the time. Opening the record sleeve, the lyric booklet inside was completely intact, exuding a strong sense of the era; the vinyl surface was shiny as new, with only a very few hairline scratches. This is incredibly rare for records several decades old, showing how much the previous owner cherished them.

Besides Teresa Teng, there were also four classic albums by Paula Tsui, including "78 Second Golden Record Selection" and "Happy World,My Home is There." These were all household names in Hong Kong during the 70s and 80s. Paula Tsui's unique deep voice, etched into the grooves of the vinyl, delivers a rich and mellow sound when played through a stylus that modern digital music can never replace.

I explained in detail to Mr. Cheung the market value of these records and the standards for assessing their condition. Knowing that these records could fetch a good price and would find new appreciative listeners after professional cleaning,Mr. Cheung smiled with relief.
