Dusty Vinyl,Ageless Times: Finding New Homes for the "Divas" My Father Left Behind
In the business of Vinyl Record Buyback, every day we shuttle through the streets and alleys of Hong Kong, opening old cardboard boxes like blind boxes of time. Today's story comes from Mr. Choi of Kowloon.
💼 Client Information and Reason for Sale
- Client: Mr. Choi (45 years old,IT industry)
- Reason for Sale: His father passed away peacefully last month due to illness. While tidying his belongings, the family discovered two large boxes of well-preserved old items under the bed. One box was filled with vinyl records from the 70s,80s,and early 90s. Mr. Choi and his siblings are not in the habit of listening to vinyl, and they don't own a record player. Rather than letting these precious musical legacies be thrown away as rubbish or continue to collect dust in a corner,it's better to entrust them to someone who appreciates them. So,he found our "9 Sound Box" online.
🎵 On-site Assessment: A Cross-Time Dialogue with "Divas"
Arriving at Mr. Choi's home,I saw a wooden wardrobe full of vintage charm. Mr. Choi brought out a heavy cardboard box containing about fifty vinyl records. Many were common Cantonese opera and 70s pop music from that era,but as I carefully flipped through to the bottom of the box,my eyes lit up—there were a few early works by Hong Kong's pop divas in excellent condition!
I carefully took them out,and Mr. Choi, standing beside me,smiled and said,"Dad used to love listening to female singers when he was young. Buying these records was probably his way of fangirling."
Among these records, the most valuable were several classic works by Faye Wong (then known as Shirley Wong) and Sandy Lam:
- Shirley Wong's Beginning: First and foremost was Faye Wong's debut self-titled album,"Shirley Wong," released under the name "Shirley Wong." To my surprise, there was not only a first-press vinyl but also a 180g platinum-level physical sales hall-of-fame Chinese record,re-mastered in 2019 by Universal Music and presented by Abbey Road Studios. The red sticker on the outer packaging was still intact! Also, her second album,"Everything," along with its vintage Japanese lyrics inner sleeve, was very well preserved.

- Sandy Lam's Urban Touch: Next were Sandy Lam's classics. One was her early self-titled album,"Sandy Lam." Pulling it out,I discovered it was a highly collectible transparent/grey-white colored vinyl, complete with lyrics poster. The other was the conceptual masterpiece,"City Rhythm Part II: Escaping the Concrete Jungle," with Sandy's free-spirited and unrestrained look on the cover, instantly transporting one back to the vibrant late 80s.

We put on white gloves and carefully inventoried each record, checking the grooves, and measuring for warping. Mr. Choi, seeing our professional and respectful attitude, his initially reluctant gaze softened into relief: "Entrusting them to you,Dad would surely be happy in heaven."
