Hundreds of treasured records almost turned into "scrap metal"? A firsthand account of Mr. Chan's record "decluttering"
In Hong Kong, where every inch is precious, balancing personal interests with living space is a common dilemma for many collectors. Last week,we received a request for recycling assistance from Sham Shui Po. Mr. Chan (alias,45,office worker),the person seeking assistance,is a seasoned pop music enthusiast. Upon entering Mr. Chan's home,we found several large boxes of records neatly stacked in a corner of the living room. These were treasures he had meticulously collected from various record stores since his student days, often by saving every penny.
"I was really crazy back then; I'd buy a new album as soon as it came out," Mr. Chan told us,pointing to the treasures on the floor. However, with the recent popularity of digital music streaming platforms and a broken record player at home, these records haven't been played in nearly ten years. "Hundreds of records sitting there, just collecting dust and taking up so much space. My wife has complained many times. I also feel that since I'm listening to music on my phone now,I might as well make a decisive move to 'declutter,' free up the space, and live a more minimalist and tidy life."
Mr. Chan frankly admitted that before contacting us,he had tried reaching out to general second-hand shops or recyclers, but their responses were very disappointing: "The people out there don't know the true value; they either treat them as ordinary junk and drive down the price,or they say they'll buy them by weight for a few tens of dollars. I believe these are the essence of Hong Kong pop music. If I sold them like waste paper,it would truly be a disservice to the effort I put into collecting them."
Professional Team On-Site: Restoring Each Record's Deserved Value
After receiving the initial photos from Mr. Chan, our professional appraisal team immediately recognized the preciousness of this collection—it was an exceptionally complete series of classic albums by the "God of Songs," Sam Hui.
That afternoon, our appraiser visited Mr. Chan's home and carefully took out each record for strict condition assessment. As seen in the image below, this collection included the PolyGram dCS digitally encoded version of "Games Gamblers Play," the classic "Modern Bodyguard," the original cardboard box edition of "The Best of Sam Hui," as well as "The Private Eyes," "Security Guard," and "Half Catty,Eight Taels," all of which have significant documentary value.

Although some outer casings showed slight signs of age,the discs inside were exceptionally well-preserved with few scratches. Our appraiser provided a transparent and reasonable quotation on the spot, based on the release year, album version (e.g.,first pressing,re-issue,special coded version),and market rarity. Seeing our meticulous handling of each record and receiving a reasonable recycling price that far exceeded his expectations,Mr. Chan immediately felt relieved, gladly signed the recycling agreement, and received the cash payment on the spot.

Appraiser's Notes:
The highlight of this recycling batch is the exceptionally high completeness of the series. Works from the golden age of Cantonese pop music have their value determined by the "first pressing origin" (e.g.,West German version,Japanese Sanyo version, local first pressing) and the matrix number of the vinyl. We refuse to use rough "one-price-fits-all" packaging and insist on individual pricing for each record to protect the seller's interests.
Product Recycling FAQs
Q1: Your website states that you recycle vinyl records. Do you also accept classic CDs and cassette tapes like Mr. Chan's?
A: Absolutely! While "vinyl record" recycling is our core,we are also very interested in classic Hong Kong CDs,SACDs,cassette tapes, and limited edition music merchandise. Especially Cantonese albums released by PolyGram,Warner,Entertainment Records, etc.,from the 70s-90s,whether vinyl or CD,have high recycling value.
Q2: How is the recycling price determined? Will you deliberately nitpick to drive down the price once you arrive on-site?
A: We adhere to the principles of transparency and integrity. Customers can first send us photos of the record cover and disc condition via WhatsApp,and we will provide a reasonable preliminary estimated price range. During the on-site visit, the appraiser will only verify against objective conditions (e.g.,whether the disc has severe scratches,if the lyric booklet is complete,if it's a first pressing,etc.). As long as the actual condition matches the photos, there will be no malicious price reduction.
Q3: Which areas in Hong Kong can you arrange for on-site recycling? Is there a minimum quantity for recycling?
A: We offer on-site recycling services throughout Hong Kong (including Hong Kong Island,Kowloon, and the New Territories). To balance logistics costs,we generally recommend a minimum of 20 items for on-site collection. However,if your collection includes extremely rare out-of-print vinyl records or box sets,we can arrange for dedicated personnel to assist even with smaller quantities.
