The Origin: A WhatsApp Message from Sha Tin
Last Tuesday afternoon,as a light rain fell outside,my phone screen lit up with a WhatsApp message.
"Hello,do you accept old Teresa Teng CDs. It's a set of 15,and they're in good condition."
The message was from Mr. Lee. In our subsequent conversation,Mr. Lee told me that he was busy helping his elderly father clean out their old residence in Sha Tin. Mr. Lee Sr. was preparing to move into a smaller elderly apartment,and many old items couldn't be taken with him. This set of Teresa Teng CDs was a cherished collection of Mr. Lee Sr.'s from over a decade ago. He used to play a few songs on the old stereo at home every afternoon. Now the stereo is broken,and there's no space in the elderly apartment for these physical records. Rather than letting them be forgotten in a corner or discarded as ordinary plastic waste,Mr. Lee Sr. hoped they could find a "destined person" who would appreciate them.
On-site Assessment: Reliving Polydor's Most Glorious Era
Looking at the photos Mr. Lee sent (as you see above),I immediately recognized it as the Teresa Teng "Golden Disc Series" 15-CD box set released by Polydor.
Considering Mr. Lee Sr.'s mobility issues and the significant number of records,we arranged a free "on-site recycling assessment" service for Mr. Lee. When I arrived at Mr. Lee's home and opened the outer box with purple patterns,it felt like opening a treasure chest of memories.
This set includes many classic albums from Teresa Teng's Polydor era,such as "Walking On The Road of Life," "The Two of Us," "Faint Feelings," and the "Island Love Songs" series. I carefully removed each CD for condition inspection:
- Case and Cover: The classic red CD tray,a signature design for many high-priced/special edition CDs of that era. The lyric booklet and cover were well-preserved,with only slight signs of age-related yellowing.
- Disc Condition: Mr. Lee Sr. was clearly a disc lover. The playing surfaces of all 15 discs were as clean as mirrors,with almost no scratches (condition reached NM level). The IFPI codes and pressing information on the inner rings were clearly visible,confirming they were original legitimate copies.
Watching me professionally and carefully inspect each record,Mr. Lee Sr. nodded slightly. I explained in detail the market value of this set,its version value,and our appraisal standards. Ultimately,we completed this recycling transaction at a price satisfactory to both parties. As I left,Mr. Lee Sr. smiled and said,"I'm relieved to leave them with you."
