From the revitalization history of Cantonese pop music,if "Fen Fei Yan" was the prelude to Cantonese pop music, then "Tears and Laughter of a Bygone Era," composed by Joseph Koo and sung by Sandra Lang for television, was the first wave. The songs sung by Samuel Hui in the film "Games Gamblers Play" were the second wave, and the songs sung by The Wynners in the film "Let's Rock" were the unstoppable third wave.
In 1967,The Loosers, the predecessor of The Wynners, was formed. Two years later, the band won second place in the "All-Hong Kong Open Amateur Singing Competition." In 1971,The Loosers won first prize at the Beach Pop Music Festival. Just as the band's future looked bright, brothers Michael and Anthony Chan left the band for some reason, and The Loosers announced their disbandment.
In 1973,Alan Tam,who returned to Hong Kong from Singapore, reformed the band with his former teammates, renaming it The Wynners. The ultimate lineup included Alan Tam,Kenny Bee,Bennett Pang,Danny Yip,and Anthony Chan. After the release of The Wynners' first single "Sunshine Lover," it received an enthusiastic response, and the title track immediately became a chart-topper. In 1974,The Wynners released their first album "Listen To The Wynners," selling over 20,000 copies that year. The English songs sung by The Wynners had strong rhythms, were passionate and uninhibited, and full of youthful vitality.
In 1975,The Wynners reached the peak of their career since the band's formation. From "The Wynners' Weekly" broadcast on RTV in January to "The Wynners Rhapsody" on TVB in July, both were warmly received.
To maintain the band's leading position in the new trend,James Wong imitated the foreign practice of inviting popular bands to film musicals, asking The Wynners to step into the limelight to film a youth musical "Let's Rock," and releasing the "Let's Rock Original Motion Picture Soundtrack" album.
On December 24,1975,the youth musical "Let's Rock" premiered in Hong Kong. The film told the story of how the unknown Wynners band rose to fame by winning a singing competition. It grossed over 1.9 million at the box office, ranking fourth among the highest-grossing Chinese films that year.
The "Let's Rock" movie soundtrack album included fourteen songs from the film. James Wong was responsible for the lyrics and music of all songs except "Play Around" and "Unity Makes Things Happen." Among them,"L-O-V-E Love" was the work that won James Wong second place in the "Hong Kong Pop Song Creation Invitational Competition" in 1974.
The songs in the film were very popular at the time, with as many as seven of the fourteen songs making it to the charts. "Diligence Brings Blessing," which advocated learning,"The Earth is Round and Round," which contained life philosophy, and the rap-flavored "Money is Closest" all had high airplay rates on radio. The Wynners' performance was fresh and natural. "Let's Rock" and "L-O-V-E Love" quickly made The Wynners famous, while "Only One Confidant" and "I Am So Lonely Today" boosted Alan Tam's and Kenny Bee's popularity.
As The Wynners' first album to feature Cantonese songs,"Let's Rock" paved the way for the band's transformation with a high starting point. With the lingering prestige of the eponymous film, and the support of James Wong,Chen Qiuxia, and others,The Wynners achieved both critical acclaim and commercial success. In that context, the Hong Kong music scene urgently needed positive and energetic idols, and The Wynners emerged at the opportune moment. Their tall and handsome appearance, fashionable and avant-garde style, and musical taste closely aligned with European and American bands destined them to be no longer "Loosers."
The success of The Wynners marked the widespread acceptance of Cantonese pop music across all social strata in Hong Kong, and from then on,singing Cantonese songs became a widespread trend.
