【9Box Music Recycle Diary】Saying Goodbye to a Big House Through Decluttering: Letting 80s Cantonese Vinyl Treasures Find
Last Wednesday afternoon,"9Box Music" received a WhatsApp message from Mr. Cheung. Without much preamble,he simply sent a few photos of vinyl records and asked,"Do you buy these records. They were all very precious to me in the past."
From the clarity of the photos and the condition of the records,we could tell at a glance that Mr. Cheung was a seasoned music enthusiast. After arranging a time,we visited his home in Kowloon.
Buyer Story: Finding a new home for beloved hobbies
Mr. Cheung, just over sixty,is a retired middle school teacher. Walking into his study,an entire wall filled with vinyl records and CDs was truly impressive.
"Actually,I'm quite reluctant to let them go," Mr. Cheung said with a sigh, handing us a cup of hot tea. "My children have all grown up,started their own families, and moved out. My wife and I find this house too spacious,so we're moving to a smaller unit in the same district next month. There simply isn't enough space in the new house for my decades-long collection. Rather than storing them in a mini-storage unit where they'll never see the light of day,I'd prefer to find someone who understands their value,so this wonderful music can continue to be enjoyed."
Mr. Cheung specifically mentioned that he had contacted many recycling companies, but most treated the records as scrap, weighing them by the pound. It wasn't until he saw our website online and felt that we were a team genuinely passionate about music that he confidently contacted us. This trust made us feel an even greater sense of responsibility.
Unboxing Surprise: Perfect Condition from the Golden Age
Among the many vinyl records Mr. Cheung selected, several truly caught our eye. For those in our line of work, seeing old records in such perfect condition is as exciting as meeting an old friend.
Danny Chan's "Winter Warmth": This classic from the DMI era – Mr. Cheung had even perfectly preserved the original oversized poster and lyric booklet! The vinyl record itself was as clean as new, with almost no signs of play, and the purple center was still vibrant.

Sally Yeh's album with an autograph: Sally from her Warner era,the cover even had her elegant autograph! Mr. Cheung chuckled, recalling that he had queued for a long time to get that autograph and had always protected it with a thick plastic sleeve.

George Lam and Blue Jeans: "George Lam's Creative + Pop Song Collection" and "Songs of Life," along with Blue Jeans' self-titled album, had covers with sharp corners,no yellowing or water stains. These are all testaments to the most brilliant period of the Hong Kong music scene in the 80s.

We carefully conducted a professional assessment and valuation of these records. Seeing our gentle handling of the records and meticulous examination of the grooves,Mr. Cheung nodded and said,"I'm relieved to leave them with you."
