CD Album Collection Value and Resale Estimation Guide - JOYO Records
People often hear about various CD versions, such as silver ring editions,Japanese Toshiba editions,Japanese Mitsubishi editions,HDCD,SACD,and so on,with prices varying greatly. Below,we'll discuss the different CD formats and detailed identification methods.
Silver Ring Edition: The biggest difference between a silver ring edition and a regular edition lies in the manufacturing of the disc's inner ring. The inner ring (and sometimes the disc body itself) of a silver ring CD is silver, while the inner ring of a regular CD is made of transparent plastic material, hence it's also called a "plastic ring edition." Additionally, most Hong Kong singers' albums released before 1991 almost all had silver ring CD first pressings, followed by regular CDs and reissued CDs. Therefore, these are also referred to as "first batch silver ring editions," produced in limited quantities and appreciating in value very quickly, because silver ring CDs stopped being produced after 1992!

Japanese "Mihonban" (Sample Disc): Japanese "Mihonban" are extremely rare promotional and audition records, very seldom found in the world. The Japanese term "Mihonban" translates to "Not for Sale" in English. Their collector's value far exceeds that of officially released albums! Typically, the back cover of the CD and the inner ring of the disc will have "sample pressing,,Sample Loaned" or similar markings printed or stickered, distinguishing them from officially released CDs!
White Label Disc (Promotional Not for Sale Record): White label discs are promotional records specifically distributed to radio DJs and music critics for early listening, allowing new songs to be publicly broadcast and promoted. White label discs are usually sent to various media outlets for promotion before the album's release date. "White label" refers to the fact that the disc's color and most of the cover are white, hence the name. Early white label discs were mostly 12-inch vinyl records or earlier cassette tapes (also known as white label tapes). Later,as vinyl records faded out in Hong Kong, white label CD records took their place. It's worth noting that the cover or disc surface of white label discs will be marked with "Promotional Use," "Not for Sale," etc.,to prevent illegal reselling. However, due to the low production volume of white label discs (only for promotional use),their covers differ from officially released albums,or they may contain unreleased special remix versions of songs, giving them collector's value.
