  • The rise of Cantonese pop music began in the 1970s. Before that,Cantonese songs were considered unfashionable and vulgar, thus unsuitable for sophisticated venues, and were even severely discriminated against. Under the double pressure of Mandarin songs and Western music, the status of Cantonese songs became even more humble, until 1974,when this situation began to change.
  • The 1974 works "A Love Story" and "Games Gamblers Play" (The Private Eyes) are considered turning points in the history of Cantonese pop music development. The voices of Sandra Lang and Samuel Hui changed people's prejudice against Cantonese pop.
  • In 1974,the theme song of the same name for the TVB drama "A Love Story" opened a new chapter for the development of Hong Kong Cantonese pop music, becoming an important milestone in its flourishing.
  • On March 11,1974,the TV drama "A Love Story," directed and written by Wong Tin-lam,premiered on TVB,starring Liza Wang,Adam Cheng,Au Ka-wai,and Chan Yau-hau. Many of the drama'sfeatured song (insert songs) were composed by Joseph Koo and sung by Sandra Lang.
  • In 1974,Entertainment Records released Sandra Lang's album "A Love Story," which included seven theme songs, insert songs, and theme music. Joseph Koo adopted an innovative concept of "Western for Chinese use" in his compositions; although the melodies were Chinese,he used Western harmonies, making them sound fresh and unconventional. It was this song,"A Love Story," that established Joseph Koo's pioneering status in the Hong Kong music scene. The "Highest Honor Award" of the Hong Kong music scene, first presented in 1982,was awarded to him.
  • Joseph Koo's works have natural and fluid melodies that are simple, catchy, and easy to accept. From the first Top Ten Chinese Gold Songs Awards, his works were featured for seven consecutive years, with five gold songs in the fifth awards coming from his pen. Almost all popular singers have collaborated with Joseph Koo.
  • Sandra Lang, who had years of experience singing English songs, used a breathy and falsetto voice when she switched to singing Cantonese songs, which was a distinct difference from traditional Cantonese singing styles. Her performance was calm and composed, with emotions expressed just right, bringing a nuanced sorrow to the songs. In the late 1960s,Sandra Lang and Amina formed the female duo "The Chopsticks," primarily singing Western pop songs. They had previously released four English albums with Entertainment Records.
  • The insert song "Missing My Love" and the theme song "A Love Story" share the same melody but different lyrics, both penned by Yip Siu-dak. He had been writing songs for films since the 1950s and consistently contributed to Cantonese opera creation. "A Fragile Life" and "Longing from Afar" were adapted and lyricized by Yip Siu-dak; both songs originated from old Mandarin pop tunes. His characteristic style is literary lyrics with a touch of Cantonese opera.
  • James Wong was responsible for writing the lyrics for four songs. His lyrics could be literary, like "The Singing Girl," or colloquial, like "Lucky It's Sunday Again." His versatile style earned him the reputation of a "witty genius." The emergence of "A Love Story" marked the beginning of widespread acceptance of Cantonese pop music across all social strata in Hong Kong. After its release,Hong Kong people no longer discriminated against Cantonese songs, and a series of classic works emerged, finally allowing Hong Kong music to find its unique voice. The famous lines from Cantonese pop songs became colloquialisms, integrating into the lives of Hong Kong people, and Cantonese pop music truly began to live up to its name and enter the public ear.
  • Besides changing Hong Kong people's listening habits and eliminating discrimination against Cantonese pop music,"A Love Story" also established the tradition of "melody first, then lyrics" for future Hong Kong pop music creation.
