- On July 13,1986,the final of the 5th New Talent Singing Awards was held at the Wan Chai New Elizabeth Stadium. After fierce competition,Man Pui-ling won the Gold Award with "Dream Partner," Andy Hui won the Silver Award with "Love in the Fog," and the tall and handsome Leon Lai won the Bronze Award with "Absolute Emptiness" by Choy Fung-wah.
- After winning the Bronze Award and joining Capital Artists,Leon Lai had no opportunity to release an album for a long time, only taking on minor roles in several TV dramas. It wasn't until 1989,when Leon Lai went to Taiwan to star in "Wind and Cloud Era" and sang its interlude "Wind and Cloud Dust," that his acting career finally took a significant turn.
- In 1990,recommended by his mentor Tai Sze-chung,Leon Lai successfully signed with PolyGram. Five years after entering the industry,Leon Lai finally released his debut solo album "Leon." This long-awaited album allowed his accumulated years of musical energy to burst forth for the first time. Songs like "Meeting in Two" and "Unrequited Romance" in the album were all love songs rich in layers and emotional depth. "Crimson Dawn," with lyrics by Yan Kui,truly reflected Leon Lai's personal journey. The release of his debut album brought Leon Lai instant fame,as he swept the Best New Artist awards at the three major annual awards ceremonies.
- In 1991,Leon Lai's second Cantonese album "Close to You" sold over double platinum. The album included "Man at the Edge," the theme song of the TV series "Man at the Edge" which he starred in,and the interlude "If This Is Love."
- The third Cantonese album "Is It Love or Fate," released in the same year, marked Leon Lai's ascent into the ranks of top-tier singers. This album surpassed Jacky Cheung's "An Unchanging Heart" and Andy Lau's "Days We Walked Together," winning the grand award for best-selling album of 1991.
- "Is It Love or Fate" was released at the same time as the hit TVB drama "Unregretful Life," starring Leon Lai,Kathy Chow,Deric Wan,and Maggie Siu. This series, which depicted young men and women struggling, encountering setbacks, and ultimately rising resiliently in the city, won the annual viewership rating championship. The theme song "Unregretful Life" was sung by Dave Wong, while Leon Lai's two interludes,"Sorry,I Love You" and "Man at Dawn," became widely known.
- "Sorry,I Love You" was composed by Lowell Lo,with lyrics by Siu Hak who used a "paradoxical" approach, combining two seemingly opposite words to create a song title that at first glance seems inexplicable but upon reflection is brilliant. It shares a similar charm with Elton John's classic hit "Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word." When "Sorry" and "I Love You," seemingly at opposite ends of love, are put together, they create an unexpected chemical reaction. Six words convey more than a thousand, hinting at how unavoidable a breakup can be. "Sorry,I Love You" achieved unprecedented commercial success and swept the annual awards, being selected for both the Top Ten Chinese Gold Songs and the Top Ten Jade Solid Gold Songs.
- The original song for "Oh! Night" is "Oh! Yeah!" by Japanese singer Kazumasa Oda. Leon Lai has always been adept at performing this type of lyrical ballad.
- After refining his skills through the first two albums,Leon Lai showed significant improvement in song interpretation and vocal performance, and his emotional delivery also became more invested. Under the careful guidance of producer Chan Wing Ming,Leon Lai's emotional control became even more skillful, and many songs, performed in his highly infectious voice, radiated a captivating brilliance.
- The pre-orders for "Is It Love or Fate" already exceeded 100,000 before its release, and after the album launched, demand outstripped supply for a time, making it the best-selling album of 1991. After years of quiet in the music scene,Leon Lai finally burst forth.
