  • In 1985,Lau Yee Tat,who had previously formed the bands DLLM and Oriental Electronic Orchestra, placed an advertisement in "" (Rock n' Roll Biweekly) to publicly recruit a singer to form a band. Anthony Wong, then a DJ at Commercial Radio 3,volunteered and entered Lau Yee Tat's musical world, and "Tat Ming Pair" was born.
  • Introduced by Yu Tsang,Tat Ming Pair signed with PolyGram. In March 1986,Tat Ming Pair released their first EP,featuring a strong British electronic music style. In September of the same year,Tat Ming Pair released their first album,"Tat Ming Pair II," and "Lost Night Drive" became their first charting song.
  • In February 1987,Tat Ming Pair released their second album,"The Stone," with Lau Yee Tat composing all ten tracks. The opening track "Departure" and the closing track "Abandon" connected the entire album as a concept album. Musically,it diversified from its electronic music foundation, with Lau Yee Tat creating more imaginative spaces. Chan Siu Kei's lyrics depicted social phenomena such as midnight street wanderers, the hypocrisy of the materialistic world, voyeurism, speculation, and world-weary thoughts. Through Anthony Wong's ethereal vocals, these themes vividly painted a picture of the fin de siècle. The album features refreshing electronic works like "Road Angel," punk-infused "Beautiful 'New World'," as well as the poignant and tragic "Withered Heart," and the melancholic and bitter "Rear Window."
  • "The Stone," adapted from "Dream of the Red Chamber," is both profound and melancholic. This breakthrough song for Tat Ming Pair was the third band song to top the RTHK Chinese Pop Chart. Due to its profound lyrics, unique musical style, and Anthony Wong's flamboyant, spiritual performance,it is widely recognized as a classic of Cantonese pop music.
  • "The Stone" has only 144 characters, yet it succinctly summarizes the theme of the literary masterpiece "Dream of the Red Chamber." The chorus uses a series of reduplicated characters to express feelings of confusion, helplessness, and sorrow. The use of reduplication not only complements the mood but also influenced the stylistic direction of Tat Ming Pair's lyrics, establishing their characteristic precision, sharpness, and aesthetic beauty. Lau Yee Tat's composition is stunning, both psychedelic and haunting, yet classically melancholic. From the first arpeggio of the harp,he plays the main melody of the chorus with beautiful double-string guitar, and this guitar riff continues, like a dream. Anthony Wong pushed his clear vocals to the extreme, delivering an ethereal and sublime interpretation of the song with his magnificent voice.
  • From their first EP in 1986 to "Do You Still Love Me. " in 1988,this was the first developmental stage of Tat Ming Pair's musical style, characterized by a series of electronic-style fast songs, such as "Road Angel" and "Rear Window." In these works, the influence of British New Romanticism and synth-pop was very strong. In stark contrast to the electronic fast songs were the minimalist, tranquil slow songs, including "Windless Autumn," and folk-flavored ballads like "The Stone," which embody the delicate and introspective side of Tat Ming Pair's music, while the latter showcases its roots and classical color.
  • "Unfulfilled Wishes" (1989) and "Nervous" (1990) marked the second stage of Tat Ming Pair's musical style development. During this period, their work became more diverse, and their musical expression richer and more varied.
  • "Nervous" became the farewell spark of the 1980s band trend. The disbandment of Tat Ming Pair formally ended the glorious era of band groups, marking the end of the band trend.
