The Beginning: An Era of Cassettes and Vinyl
Last weekend, our appraiser visited a Mong Kok walk-up to meet Mr Chan, 58. The long-time local listener's study felt like a small museum of 1980s Hong Kong pop.
“These have been with me for decades, from treasure hunting at Sino Centre after school to having grey hair now,” he smiled, gently touching a sleeve.
Asked why he was selling, he gave a practical reason familiar to many Hong Kong residents. “It's hard, but the children are grown and belongings keep piling up. We're renovating and turning the study into our granddaughter's playroom. There isn't space to keep these properly. I mostly listen to digital music on my phone now, and the player has been broken for years. Instead of leaving them gathering dust, I'd like 9Box Music to find new owners who appreciate them and have equipment to play them.”
There was no dramatic twist in his decision, just accommodation to everyday reality and an open-minded love of music. For him, this was continuity rather than simply selling old belongings.
Inspection and Surprises: Revisiting Hong Kong Music's Golden Years
Several records he carefully brought out vividly traced the development of Hong Kong bands.
First was a classic Wynners album. Seeing the youthful Alan Tam and Kenny Bee recalled his own energetic school band days. The sleeve edges showed minor age wear, but the disc was well kept and retained its gloss.

Next was a forward-looking Blue Jeans release. The members, including Pal Sinn, still looked stylish by today's standards. “《豈有此理》 really expressed how we young people felt. The moment the intro started, you felt energised,” he said.

The biggest surprise was Beyond's 《永遠等待》 EP, reflecting the band's distinctive early style and experimental spirit. Both its sleeve and lyric sheet were exceptionally well kept, a scarce find on today's market.

Vinyl Buyback: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q1: I cannot identify pressings. Will you make an unfairly low offer?
A: No. Transparency is our principle. Our experienced appraisers explain how pressing, such as first pressing or reissue, and condition affect value, ensuring a fair offer reflecting market conditions.
Q2: Can records with damaged or mouldy sleeves still be sold?
A: It depends. Sleeves affect value, but if the record is particularly scarce or the disc well kept, we are still happy to make a strong offer. Send photographs for an initial assessment.
Q3: How does the process work? Do I have to transport the records?
A: Send photographs by WhatsApp or WeChat for an initial valuation. For larger quantities, such as more than 50 records, we offer free home buyback throughout Hong Kong, saving you transport time and effort.
Q4: Do you buy classical or foreign-language records as well as pop?
A: We buy many genres, including Cantonese and Mandarin pop, Western rock, jazz and classical symphonies. Well-kept records are what we seek.
