- On September 1,1984,Sing Tao Evening News organized the "Hong Kong 18 Districts Amateur Singing Competition." After the competition,Sing Tao Records recorded "Hong Kong 18 Districts Amateur Singing Competition Champion Elite Song Collection."
- In March 1985,Jacky Cheung sang "Smile Again Maria" and "Crossed Out" on the compilation album "Youth Rhythm PolyGram." In April of the same year,Jacky Cheung released his debut album "Smile," which sold three platinum copies. The lead single "Love Has Faded" was simultaneously selected for both the Top Ten Chinese Gold Songs and the Top Ten Golden Melodies. At the 8th Top Ten Chinese Gold Songs Awards Ceremony,Jacky Cheung won the "Most Promising New Artist Gold Award."
- In February 1986,Jacky Cheung released his second album "Amour / Her Distant Home." The album not only featured three classic love songs,"Amour," "Her Distant Home," and "Half Moon," but also included "Hard to Obey," which won third place in the "Hong Kong Pop Song Creation Invitation Competition," as well as "Farewell My Concubine" and "Song of Chu," which were theme songs for the TVB drama "The War Between Chu and Han."
- The original song for "Her Distant Home" is "Romantic Railroad" by Japanese artist Shinji Tanimura. The original lyrics expressed reflections prompted by the left and right sides of a train track, singing about the gap and choices between dreams and reality. Pan Yuen-Leung's "short story" style lyrics tell a deeply moving love story, describing how the lovers relied on each other on the mountain every night, until "she" went far away, separating the two. The narrative continues until leukemia took "her" life, and the singer returns to the hillside to reminisce. Jacky Cheung's tearful singing makes a beautiful but tragic love story incredibly touching.
- On September 7,1985,the finals of the "International Youth Year Hong Kong Pop Song Creation Invitation Competition," organized by RTHK,were held at the University Hall. "Ten Thousand Tomorrows," composed by Lam Miu Tak,written by Lam Chun Keung, arranged by Lam Miu Tak,and sung by Li Chung Ho and Yeung Chor Ying, became the championship song. The runner-up was "Crossroads," composed by Chan Fong Wing, written by Poon Yuen Leung, arranged by Tony Lo,and sung by Raena. "Hard to Obey," composed by Albert Au,written by Lo Kwok Jim,arranged by Tony Lo,and sung by Jacky Cheung, won third place, and also received the Best Arrangement and
- Best Performance awards. RTHK specially produced the compilation album "Peace Shuttle: Hong Kong Pop Song Creation Invitation Competition," which included the competition's theme song "Peace Shuttle" and twelve participating works.
- "True Face,False Mask" is the theme song for the movie "The Inspector Wears Skirts," starring Sammo Hung,Jacky Cheung,Joey Wong, and David Chiang. This was Jacky Cheung's first film role.
- The original song for "Half Moon" is "Dream Continues" by the Japanese rock band "Anzen Chitai," composed by Koji Tamaki. Carlo's lyrics are known for their romantic and beautiful imagery, from leaning on the midnight moon to the gently floating evening breeze, and then to a lovely face. The lyricist's cinematic descriptions perfectly portray the night scenery. The MV for "Half Moon" featured Lo Mei-wei as the female lead. This song was also used as an interlude in the movie "Devoted to Me," and the moment its melody began was considered a classic scene marking the couple's on-screen romance. Jacky Cheung and Lo Mei-wei's first collaboration in this film led to a celebrated relationship in the entertainment industry, beginning their ten-year courtship.
- After its release, the album "Amour / Her Distant Home" was a huge commercial success, quickly breaking four platinum sales. Under PolyGram's aggressive promotion,Jacky Cheung rapidly rose to fame within just over a year, transforming from an unknown newcomer into a rising star, rivaling the popularity of Alan Tam and Leslie Cheung.
