- In 1988, PolyGram executive Kwan Wai-lun arranged for a newcomer to audition at the recording studio. Chan Kin-ho (Xiang Xuehuai) and other record producers rushed to the scene. Hearing that this newcomer, a winner of a major singing competition in Japan, possessed exceptional vocal skills, everyone was eager to see her. With long hair, a red miniskirt, and high heels, a swaying figure walked into the recording studio. Her composure and poise earned nods of approval from the producers present. She chose to sing Whitney Houston's "Greatest Love of All," using the original key. Her outstanding performance was in no way inferior to the original, and the rich and varied vocal timbre further enhanced the song's emotional impact. After her performance, the audience erupted in cheers. This stunning newcomer was Shirley Kwan.
- Back in June 1986, at the age of twenty, Shirley Kwan participated in the 5th New Talent Singing Contest, but ultimately failed to advance to the finals. In August 1988, Shirley Kwan participated in the 5th "Marine Blue Singing Contest" held in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, and won the championship with her rendition of "We".
- In March 1989, Shirley Kwan released her first Cantonese album after signing with PolyGram, "Winter Love," which immediately achieved gold record sales. The hit song "Rebellious Man" featured the line "Oh Andy Andy..." which drew the attention of music fans to this newcomer.
- In November 1989, Shirley Kwan released her second Cantonese album, "A Rare Lover," and at the same time released the album "Sav Goodbye" in Japan.
- "A Rare Lover" is inspired by the line "Priceless treasures are easy to find, but a loving man is hard to come by" from the poem "To a Neighboring Woman" by the Tang Dynasty poet Yu Xuanji. Xiang Xuehuai didn't write it as a tragic love song; even with unrequited love, he reveals a positive and optimistic view of love. Xiang Xuehuai compares the approaching love to the awakening of early spring, echoing his earlier work, "Late Spring," written for Alan Tam. He uses a wealth of vocabulary related to happiness and love, vividly depicting the sweetness of love, and incorporating the classic romantic scene of "running in the wind" into the lyrics. The lyrics are so beautiful that they evoke vivid imagery. The lyrics and music blend seamlessly; the lyrics' message, combined with the light and lyrical melody, and Shirley Kwan's emotionally charged performance, made the song an instant hit upon its release.
- The avant-garde and unconventional "Bloody Mary" is a work by Chow Kai-sang, with a rock flavor. The dense and concise lyrics and the fast-paced rhythm reveal Shirley Kwan's aloof side. "Star-Painting" and "Pop Style" are adaptations of "Paint" and "Dressed For Success" from the Swedish band Roxette's second album "Look Sharp!". The dynamic and rhythmic "Star-Painting" is a duet between Hacken Lee and Shirley Kwan.
- Shirley Kwan's voice is clear and melodious, captivating and sexy. She is adept at grasping the nuances of a song, and her signature singing style is unique. Whether it's a melancholic ballad or a fast-paced dance track, she handles it with ease, demonstrating her ability to master various musical styles and showcasing her profound vocal skills.
- Shirley Kwan had a successful year at the three major award ceremonies, winning the Silver Award for Most Promising Newcomer at the Top Ten Chinese Gold Songs Awards, the Most Popular Newcomer Award at the Top Ten Jade Solid Gold Songs Awards, and the Gold Award for Best New Female Singer at the Ultimate Song Chart Awards Presentation. Her song "A Rare Lover" was selected as one of the Top Ten Jade Solid Gold Songs, and its composer, Tony Lo, won the Best Chinese Pop Song Award at the 12th Top Ten Chinese Gold Songs Awards.
- In 1989, Priscilla Chan announced her temporary departure from the music scene to study in the United States, while Cally Kwong switched to DMI. As a newcomer, Shirley Kwan was immediately promoted by PolyGram Records and molded into a new generation of music idol.
