- On July 13, 1986, the 5th New Talent Singing Contest was held at the Sheung Hang Auditorium in Wan Chai. After fierce competition, Man Pui-ling won the gold award with "Dream Companion", Andy Hui won the silver award with "Foggy Love", and the tall and handsome Leon Lai won the bronze award with Choi Fung-wah's "Absolute Emptiness".
- After winning the bronze award, Leon Lai joined Capital Artists but had no opportunity to release an album for a long time, only playing minor supporting roles in a few TV dramas. It wasn't until 1989, when he went to Taiwan to star in "The Storm Riders" and sang the theme song "Storm and Dust," that his acting career finally took a major turn.
- In 1990, with the recommendation of his teacher Dai Sicong, Leon Lai successfully signed with PolyGram. Five years after entering the industry, Leon finally released his debut solo album, *Leon*. This long-awaited record allowed his pent-up musical energy to explode for the first time. Songs such as "Meeting in Two Schools" and "Untitled Romance" on the album are love songs with rich layers and complexities, while "Red Dawn," with lyrics by Yin Kui, reflects Leon's personal journey. The release of his debut album made Leon an instant star, and he swept the newcomer awards at the three major award ceremonies of the year.
- In 1991, Leon Lai's second Cantonese album, "Close to You," achieved double platinum sales. The album included the theme song "On the Edge" and the interlude "If This Is Love" from the TV series "On the Edge of Love," in which he starred.
- The third Cantonese album, "Is It Love or Fate," released in the same year, propelled Leon Lai into the ranks of top-tier singers. This album beat Jacky Cheung's "Unchanging Heart" and Andy Lau's "The Days We Walked Together" to win the 1991 annual sales champion award.
- When "Love Is Fate" was released, the TVB drama "No Regrets in This Life," starring Leon Lai, Kathy Chow, Deric Wan, and Maggie Siu, was airing. This drama, which tells the story of young men and women struggling in the city, encountering setbacks, and ultimately rising up tenaciously, won the annual ratings champion. The theme song "No Regrets in This Life" was sung by Dave Wong, and the two insert songs "Sorry, I Love You" and "At Dawn" sung by Leon Lai became household names.

- "Sorry, I Love You," composed by Tony Lu, employs a paradoxical technique, combining two seemingly opposite words to create a title that, while initially puzzling, yields a brilliant result upon closer examination. It shares a similar artistic merit with Elton John's classic hit, "Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word." The seemingly polar opposites of love, "Sorry" and "I love you," when placed together, create an unexpected chemistry; six words speak louder than a thousand words, subtly suggesting how unavoidable the breakup was. "Sorry, I Love You" achieved unprecedented commercial success, dominating the annual awards ceremonies and being selected for both the Top Ten Chinese Gold Songs and the Top Ten Jade Solid Gold Songs.
- The original song for "Oh! Night" is "Oh! Yeah!" by Japanese singer Kazumasa Oda. Leon Lai has always been adept at performing this kind of lyrical slow love song.
- Having honed his skills with the first two albums, Leon Lai has shown significant improvement in both song interpretation and vocal technique, and he is also deeply invested in the emotions conveyed. Under the meticulous guidance of producer Chan Wing-ming, Leon Lai's control over emotions has become even more adept, and many songs shine with captivating brilliance under his highly infectious voice.
- Before its release, "Is It Love or Fate" had already garnered over 100,000 pre-orders, and after its release, the album was in high demand and short supply, becoming the best-selling album of 1991. After years of silence in the music scene, Leon Lai finally burst onto the scene.
