In 1989,Dave Wang officially entered the Hong Kong music scene with his first Cantonese album,"The Role of the Story". This album not only achieved an astonishing five-platinum sales record at the time, but also became a rare treasure in the eyes of countless audiophiles and vinyl collectors. The album includes the title track "The Role of the Story","Possibility","A Bit Sad,A Bit Obsessed",and many other classics, showcasing Dave Wang's unique "lonely wanderer love song" style to the fullest.
For vinyl collectors, the value of this record lies not only in its melodies but also in its version and preservation quality. Below is a professional analysis and buyback reference for different versions of "The Role of the Story":
In-depth Analysis of "The Role of the Story" Vinyl Record Versions
| Version Category | Release Year | Distinguishing Features | Collection Value Assessment |
| Hong Kong Warner First Press | 1989 | No barcode on the back cover, finely engraved inner ring, thick texture of the sleeve print. | Extremely High: Closest to the master tape in sound quality, highly sought after by experienced audiophiles. |
| Korea Press | 1989 | "MADE IN KOREA" printed on the record label or inner ring. | High: Warner often commissioned pressing in Korea back then, with excellent sound transparency. |
| Radio Promo Version (Not For Sale) | 1989 | Record label printed with "Not for Sale" or "white label",usually accompanied by a radio playlist. | Rare: Extremely limited circulation,a target for ultimate collectors. |
| Modern Reissue | After 2010 | Modern barcode on the back cover, usually 180g colored vinyl or heavy pressing. | Medium: Suitable for daily playback, not a top cashd target in the second-hand resale market. |
Key Factors Determining buyback Price
When we perform Dave Wang's old record buyback,we conduct a professional evaluation based on the following details to ensure the fairest offer for our customers:
- Jacket Condition: Is there any sign of moisture, mold, fading,or split seams on the jacket. If a first-press jacket is maintained like new,the price can double.
- Insert: Is the original lyric booklet still present. Is there any graffiti, creases,or missing pages.
- Media Grading: Are there noticeable hairlines or deep scratches on the record surface under strong light. We mainly acquire records graded NM (Near Mint) or EX (Excellent).
- OBI Strip (Side Tag): Although Hong Kong vinyl records rarely come with OBI strips,if there are original promotional stickers or specific accessories from that era,it will significantly enhance the collecting value.
