"The Water's Edge" (By the Water) is the theme song of Qiong Yao's film of the same name, originally performed by Taiwanese singers Jiang Lei and Gao Lingfeng in 1975. The song was written by Qiong Yao and composed by Lin Jiaqing, with lyrics inspired by "Jian Jia" from the "Classic of Poetry," depicting a beautiful yet melancholic love story.
In 1980,Teresa Teng re-recorded the song and included it in her album "Yan Hong Xiao Qu." Upon its release,Teresa Teng's version quickly became popular across China, becoming one of her classic works. Teresa Teng's interpretation perfectly conveyed the emotions in the lyrics; her gentle yet magnetic voice beautifully presented the song's sorrow and beauty.
Lyrics:
Green grass vast, white mist boundless A fair maiden by the water's edge Green grass lush, white mist hazy A fair maiden dwelling by the water I wish to swim upstream To be by her side But alas, dangerous shoals lie ahead The path is long and far I wish to drift downstream To search for her direction Yet I glimpse,as if faintly She is in the center of the water I wish to swim upstream To whisper softly with her But alas, dangerous shoals lie ahead The path is winding and endless I wish to drift downstream To search for her trace Yet I see,as if vaguely She stands in the water Green grass vast, white mist boundless A fair maiden by the water's edge
For seasoned audiophiles and record collectors, listening to Teresa Teng vinyl records means revisiting the golden age of Chinese pop music and pursuing the ultimate analog sound quality. The "The Water's Edge" album, released by Polydor in 1980,preserved the rich details and airiness of Teresa Teng's voice through excellent vinyl mastering. With the continuous rise in the second-hand vinyl record market in recent years, different release versions of this album show significant differences in their vinyl resale prices.
To he lp collectors better understand the value of their records, here are some of the most sought-after versions in the current second-hand Teresa Teng LP record market:
| Release Version / Region | Record Label | Release Year | Collection Characteristics & Market Popularity Indicator |
| Hong Kong Polydor First Pressing | Polydor | 1980 | Extremely high market popularity. The sound quality is the richest. First pressings can usually be identified by the matrix number in the runout groove. Versions in pristine condition with original lyric sheets have significant appreciation potential. |
| Taiwan Kolin Version | Kolin Records | 1980 | High collection value. Due to early Taiwanese copyright ownership,Kolin's versions may differ slightly from the Hong Kong version in cover design and track arrangement. A complete "Kolin OBI strip" is key to its high resale value. |
| Japanese Release | Taurus / Polydor | 1980 s | Audiophile's top choice. Japanese vinyl is renowned for its excellent pressing technology, extremely low surface noise, and exquisite packaging. The sound quality is delicate, making it a sought-after item for audio enthusiasts pursuing superior listening experiences. |
| Recent Audiophile Reissues | Universal Music, etc. | Recent years | Entry-level and practical. For example,180-gram heavy vinyl re-mastered at Abbey Road Studios is suitable for daily listening. However, from the perspective of collecting antique second-hand vinyl, its historical added value is less than that of the original pressings. |
If you are considering seeking a professional vinyl record appraisal service,in addition to confirming the record's release version, its physical condition (grade) is the most crucial factor in determining the final Teresa Teng vinyl purchase price:
- Media Condition: This is the basis for evaluating sound quality. Is the record surface clean and new. Are there obvious physical scratches, scuffs,or moldy white spots caused by moisture. A NM (Near Mint) condition record's price is significantly higher than a VG (Very Good, but with signs of play) condition.
- Sleeve Condition:Chinese classic LP appraisal places great importance on packaging. Does the sleeve have seam splits, creases, water damage, tears,or writing. A sleeve with sharp corners and no obvious wear can greatly increase the overall value of the record.
- Completeness of Accessories (Complete in Box): For popular vinyl records from the 80 s,if the "original lyric sheet," "poster," and "OBI strip" (promotional band on the outside of the packaging) that came with the record can be preserved intact to this day, their second-hand vinyl record appraisal will increase exponentially,as these fragile paper accessories are very susceptible to loss over time.
By understanding the version differences and condition grading standards above, you will be able to more accurately grasp the true market value and cultural heritage of this classic "The Water's Edge" vinyl record.
