[9Box Music Recycling Diary] Echoes of Time: A Retired Teacher's "Decluttering" – The Perfect Home for Leslie Cheung and Anita Mui's Rare Vinyl Records

This afternoon, it was drizzling in Hong Kong, and a customer with a handcart came into the shop. Several thick cardboard boxes were securely tied to the handcart, carefully wrapped in a layer of waterproof plastic film.

He is Mr. Chau, 65 years old, a recently retired middle school teacher.

Unable to discard them as waste, he sought someone who "understood them."

"Boss, a friend told me you offer fair prices for vinyl records here. These are my treasures of several decades; could you take a look. " Mr. Chau carefully opened the cardboard boxes while wiping rain from his glasses.

During our conversation, I learned that Mr. Chau was preparing to "move from a big house to a smaller one" (moving to a smaller unit to enjoy retirement life), and his new home simply didn't have space for the bulky audio equipment and hundreds of vinyl records. His children advised him to recycle them as waste paper or sell them to street vendors, but he adamantly refused.

"I queued up to buy each of these when I was young, and every one has a story. It would break my heart to sell them as plastic waste! I searched online for a long time and saw the recycling stories of your '9Box Music,' and I felt that you are people who truly understand music and respect records, so I specially packed them up and brought them over," Mr. Chau said with a smile.

Unboxing Surprise: The Glamorous Years of the 80s and 90s

When I opened Mr. Chau's cardboard boxes, it was like opening a time machine to Hong Kong's pop music scene. The album covers were incredibly well-preserved, with the original plastic sleeves still intact:

The first thing that caught my eye was Anita Mui's classic series (as pictured). From "Flying on Stage" and "Bad Girl" to "Femme Fatale," and even the collectible "Anita Mui In Brasil." The ever-changing Queen's aura on the covers remained, and it was rare that Mr. Chau had kept even the lyric booklets inside spotless.

Next, there were several historically significant albums by Sam Hui (Sam Gor). "79 Summer Song Collection," "Nian Nu Jiao," "Power of the Crown," and "It's Most Important to Have Fun" from his Cinepoly era. These are milestones that witnessed the rise of Cantopop in Hong Kong.

But what truly amazed me were three copies of Leslie Cheung's "Stand Up" album! This album pioneered the concept of multi-colored vinyl (available in green, pink, purple, yellow, black, etc.). Mr. Chau actually collected the green and pink versions! Seeing Gor Gor's vibrant look on the cover, I couldn't help but marvel that Mr. Chau must have been a super fan who kept up with trends back then.

Professional Evaluation, Giving Memories Their Due Value

For treasures like these, we never cut corners. We put on white gloves and meticulously examined the grooves of each record, the flatness of the discs, and the condition of the sleeves under professional lighting. Although Mr. Chau's records were over thirty years old, they had been stored vertically and cleaned regularly, resulting in almost no noticeable crackling (noise) or warping.

Ultimately, we provided a buy-back quote that far exceeded Mr. Chau's expectations. Mr. Chau was momentarily stunned after hearing the quote, then he smiled with relief: "So they really are that valuable. Handing them over to you, I know they will find their next appreciative owner, and I can rest assured."
